It's what we do!

Helping Veterans and their families

To help care for all veterans who served our nation by assisting the VA&R and the VAVS programs. • To impact our community in a positive way, by helping and assisting veterans, and supporting various American Legion programs. • To provide assistance to all veterans, especially those in need of care. • To help assure that our veterans, POWs and MIAs from all wars will never be forgotten. • To show pride for those who served this country to keep us free. • For God and country, and to support our veterans and their families. • To show the pride we take knowing our contributions to The American Legion and its charitable programs are making a difference for the youth of America. • To help those in need.

The Detachment of Arizona Sons of The American Legion have adopted two specific charities that our members support through their efforts within the Squadrons;

Our local state charity is C.H.A.M.P. Foundation (Charities Helping American Military Patriots)

A nonprofit organization, created for the collection of donated monetary funds from the public, to be used for an identified cause that supports veterans and their families.

  • Champ Foundation is a 501(c)3 formed to benefit the Tucson Fisher House specifically. Donations made to CHAMP are made available for the Fisher House Manager to address the needs of the guests of the facility as soon as they are deposited.
  • Donations made to Fisher House Foundation in Rockville MD is primarily used to raise the multi-million dollar amounts to build new Fisher Houses. Fisher Houses are built using a 50/50 model of fundraising: 50% of the donations for a Fisher House must be generated by the local community where the house is to be built. In turn, Fisher House Foundation matches that 50% to complete the $4-6 million required to build each house. This ensures a vested interest in the success of the Fisher House after it is open and running with ongoing community support of its mission.
  • Champ was formed to fulfill the local community ongoing support of Fisher House Tucson  in that same spirit. Either way, your money is supporting Veterans and Active Duty personnel and their families as their medical needs are being addressed by the VA and the military medical systems.

Our National Charity is C.W.F. (Child Welfare Foundation)

  • In 1952, Dr. Garland D. Murphy Jr. gave to The American Legion a large contribution that would benefit children. The Legion and Murphy entered into a trust agreement that established the Child Welfare Foundation, approved by the National Executive Committee on Oct. 15, 1953.
  • Though created by the Legion, the Child Welfare Foundation, Inc., is a separate 501(c)3 corporation.
  • CWF accepts funding proposals from nonprofit organizations for projects that contribute to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual welfare of children. Grants are only given to entities that help U.S. children in a large geographic area; they are not awarded for day-to-day operating expenses or special operating expenses.
  • In 1955, the foundation made its first three grants, totaling $22,500, to three organizations: the Delinquency Control Institute, the National Association for Retarded Children and the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness. To date, more than $17 million has been awarded to assist our nation’s children.
  • During CWF’s annual board of directors meeting in Indianapolis on Oct. 13, 2019, The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation awarded $811,282 in grants to 19 nonprofits.
